Hardy perennials for regional clay

Founded on Wealden clay, Meadowcroft began with a single cold frame and a refusal to pamper stock. We grow plants that survive true winters outdoors.

Grower discipline

Three rules of our beds

Outdoor hardiness

Coarse leaf mold

Climate patience

Every perennial overwinters without artificial glasshouse heating. When cold rain and frost arrive, our stock develops dense root systems that never suffer shock once bedded.

We enrich heavy local soil using mature composted beech and oak mulch collected each autumn. Healthy mycorrhizal networks form naturally in unsterilised, living potting media.

We propagate slowly from mature mother borders rather than importing quick forced plugs. Plants leave our nursery only when crowns and stems are sturdy enough to thrive.

Trial borders

Grown in open elements

Our south-facing beds sit exposed to High Weald weather year-round. Here we test cultivars against soggy winter soil and parched summer spells before offering divisions at the potting bench.

Twin unheated propagation tunnels shelter tender young cuttings through damp spring mornings, catching natural daylight through seasoned glass without commercial forced ventilation or artificial feed.

Troubled roots welcome here

Bring a spadeful of your garden clay or a struggling perennial crown by the nursery. We will examine root condition together over coffee at the bench.
